This is another advantage linked to such diets. Certain people, however, experience negative side effects when following this type of eating program, including diarrhea, stomach pain, and similar digestive issues.

In years gone by, those who feel such diets are dangerous cite a lack of protein. Protein deficiency can lead to numerous health problems. Other experts, however, state that people can maintain their protein levels simply by planning their meals wisely when following this type of diet. Some scientists believe that the amount of protein required by most human beings can be obtained solely from plant proteins. Additional studies are being completed to discover which group is correct.

There are numerous subcategories that fall under the traditional vegan diet. Certain individuals adhere to what is called a raw diet, where no food products are cooked. The philosophy behind this is that beneficial vitamins and minerals leach out of certain foods when they are cooked to a certain temperature; however, this depletion does not occur when the foods are consumed raw.
